Scouting Ireland faces uncertain future in wake of child sex abuse scandal

The aim of scouting is to help develop young people into independent individuals with good morals, who “know how to treat people well,” he said.

and yet, later in this article, we read this

“At the moment there is only one insurer who is willing to insure Scouting Ireland in this country,” Aisling Kelly told the private meeting. The historic documentation for the CBSI was in “much better shape” than records from the SAI, she said.

If Scouting Ireland is forced to bear the entire cost of lawsuits from past abuse in the SAI itself, the cost is “going to be huge,” McClenaghan said.

and then we come to the enormity of the problem:

Its board is due to consider a range of emergency financial measures at a meeting on Saturday. If the number of alleged victims continues to increase, even selling assets such as scout dens may be considered, Kelly has said.

The Pandora’s box of past child sexual abuse in the organisation, which lay dormant for decades, has now burst open, with the number of abuse survivors coming forward expected to keep increasing.

Scouting Ireland’s board has vowed that nothing will be hidden, and that legacy failings will be addressed transparently. However, current goodwill towards the organisation may not be enough to save it from the sins of the past.

Decorated soldier Baden-Powell killed men for less cause than this.

Think about that the next time you hear some soyed-up hipster scouter blabbering about empowering youth to lead ethical lives blah blah blah.

From one of many articles published recently by the Irish Times. Read it all at irishtimes.com:

Allan Mathews (35) has been involved with scouting since he was eight years old, and is now a leader with the St Patrick’s group, in Dundalk, Co Louth, one of Scouting Ireland’s largest troops in the country.

In the troop den on Thursday night a group of 20 cubs, aged from nine to 11, were learning how to navigate using compasses. Upstairs a larger group of scouts, ranging in age from 12 to 15, played a series of games on their last meeting before Christmas.

The crisis over the historic child sexual abuse scandal facing the century-old youth organisation appeared far removed from the noisy Dundalk scout den.

“My stomach turned, it’s not something that you ever want to hear,” Mathews said, describing the moment he saw the news of the controversy break.

An ongoing review by Scouting Ireland has identified 317 alleged child sex abuse victims, and 212 alleged abusers.

Evidence from the review details abuse that occurred at “all levels within the organisation”, cases where information was “covered up” and alleged perpetrators were permitted to “move from group to group”, Scouting Ireland’s new chairperson Aisling Kelly told a stunned meeting of senior scout leaders on Monday.

“If that was true, that was disgusting, the thought of it is sickening . . . It’s not something that I would ever have been able to comprehend happening,” Mathews said.

“We detest the thoughts of what happened to the poor innocent kids,” he went on, adding that he hoped the gardaí would investigate allegations now surfacing to the fullest extent.

Despite it being the era of the smartphone and computer game, the Dundalk troop’s numbers have increased year on year. The troop has 180 juvenile members, and “we could take 30 more kids tomorrow morning,” Mathews said.

The organisation has taken a hit in relation to the public, but the national scandal has not eroded the trust between parents and local leaders in Dundalk, he said.

In recent months Mathews’s six-year-old son joined the younger “beavers” age group. “It’s a way of life, I could never see myself leaving, I’m in it 27 years [and] it’s something I’m proud of being a part of,” Mathews said.

The aim of scouting is to help develop young people into independent individuals with good morals, who “know how to treat people well,” he said.

BSA v Teal and the Havertown Sea Scouts

Here’s a fascinating case from 1974 about a purported homosexual sea scout skipper and the BSA’s allowed expiration of his credentials and the unit’s charter.

You see, in 1974 even a Philadelphia judge could embrace reality that today would end with him afraid to walk the streets of the City of Brotherly Luvs.

Despite his counsel’s vigorous assertions, there is no doctrine of law which could require a responsible organization like the Boy Scouts to accept individuals in leadership roles who have questionable character even though the Boy Scouts could not establish a prior conviction or produce proof beyond a reasonable doubt. The future of its youth is a nation’s most precious asset; yet by definition the young are frail, vulnerable and malleable. Their future strength may well be dependent upon whether they are exposed to positive leadership or abusive exploitation. Even liberal spirits would not confuse the different milieus of a criminal case and the prerequisite proof associated therewith with the educational setting of a private organization such as the Boy Scouts of America. I am not unaware of some of the classic civil rights cases mentioned by defendant’s counsel at oral argument. Yet I do not find that those civil rights cases assuring blacks equal options have any precedential value in establishing for a purported homosexual any constitutional right to run a Boy Scout Troop. Bluntly, blackness and homosexuality are not the same phenomenon.

BSA Membership Tumbled Amid Scandals and Decision to Allow Girls — Now They’re on the Brink of Bankruptcy

BSA Membership Tumbled Amid Scandals and Decision to Allow Girls — Now They’re on the Brink of Bankruptcy

Boy Scouts of America (BSA) decided to allow girls into their program after their membership began falling, but the numbers continued to tumble thereafter, leaving the organization facing potential bankruptcy.

BSA’s program, for 11 to 17-year-olds, planned to change the name to Scouts BSA, with members referring to themselves as “scouts,” rather than “boy” or “girl” — they were also looking to allow older girls to earn the highest rank of Eagle Scout.

The announcement was met with a lot of criticism, especially when it came to their sister organization, Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA). GSUSA’s Chief Customer Lisa Margosian previously said they were “disappointed” in BSA’s handling of the situation.

When announcing the change in 2017, the BSA said in a statement the “historic decision” was made after receiving many requests from families and girls interested in the program.

Consideration of declaring bankruptcy

BSA’s move toward allowing girls and transgender boys into their programs lead to a continual downfall in membership in recent years and now the organization is facing bankruptcy, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Filing for bankruptcy comes amidst legal costs in the organization’s handling of sexual abuse allegations.

In a BSA statement released on Wednesday, Chief Scout Executive Michael B. Surbaugh said they are working to “explore all options available to ensure that the local and national programming of the Boy Scout of America continues uninterrupted.”

After their decision to open the doors in their program to other genders and change the name, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints — which was one of the organization’s largest sponsors — cut their ties to the BSA after a relationship of over 100 years.

In November, the GSUSA filed a trademark lawsuit against BSA for dropping the word “boy” from their flagship program, claiming it caused confusion among the public and creating complications as “parents interested in signing up for Girl Scouts programs have instead mistakenly signed up for the new girls’ programs offered by BSA,” NBC News reported.

The organization has hired Sidley Austin LLP law firm as they look to possibly file for chapter 11 bankruptcy, WSJ reported.

The BSA’s future depends partly on the “outcome of sex-abuse-related litigation and future damages awarded,” according to WSJ.

Surbaugh said in the statement that “at no time in our history have we knowingly allowed a sexual predator to work with youth” and that they act quickly to address those issues related to abuse allegations.

According to WSJ, BSA leaders commented saying the latest lawsuit could cause BSA “to pay damages out of its own funds to the extent the claims are not covered by insurance or if the insurance carriers are unable or unwilling to honor the claims.”

The hefty costs due to sexual abuse allegations and the organization’s downfall in membership could lead the 108-year-old nonprofit to declare bankruptcy.

“Woke” Goes Broke: Boy Scouts Filing for Bankruptcy

“Woke” Goes Broke: Boy Scouts Filing for Bankruptcy

The once proud organization known as the Boy Scouts is declaring bankruptcy after severely flagging numbers due to a myriad of problems, including implementing social justice measures to make it more inclusive.

According to the Daily Caller, the Boy Scouts changed its name to Scouts BSA and began to allow girls into their ranks. Before that, the Boy Scouts ruled that openly gay scouts and scout leaders could also join the program. This lead to a serious decline in membership and now the organization is filing Chapter 11:

The Wednesday report comes in the wake of sinking membership and multiple controversies surrounding the 108-year-old organization, including sex abuse allegationsand its controversial decision to change its program name from Boy Scouts to Scouts BSA and allow girls into that program.

Chicago law firm Sidley Austin has reportedly been hired to assist in what would be a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing.

As the organization has made decisions deemed to be more inclusive, such as allowing openly gay scouts in 2013 and scoutmasters in 2015 as well as the 2018 decision to allow girls, membership has continued to decline sharply, from over 4 million members at its peakto a claimed 2.3 million members at present.

It’s only going to get worse as well. The Mormon Church has announced that it’s discontinuing its partnership with the Boy Scouts and will be starting up its own boy’s program in 2020, according to the Daily Caller. When that happens, the Scouts will lose a third of its membership.

Combined with the fact that it kept sexual abuse allegations secret for decades, the Scouts seems to have rotted from the inside.

Whether the Scouts would have survived in this modern age without any of these events happening is still up for debate, but it definitely didn’t help it. Boys clubs are becoming few and far between with each of them coming under attack for not being inclusive to girls or members of the LGBT community.

Boys are increasingly encouraged to be safer and more accepting of things that run against their nature. This is more dangerous than our society as a whole can realize yet, as boys need to be able to be boys. However, in this day and age, the very nature of boys is often the subject of ridicule and even labeled as a societal evil.

It’s my honest hope that the Scouts survive, but I can only see it doing so by making itself return to its original principles. The chances of that happening, however, are slim to none.

Boy Scouts of America weighs bankruptcy

Well, people, I tried my best to warn everyone about B.S.A. Inc’s in-process suicide.

Fell on deaf ears.

Some of the willfully blind got pissed at me instead of B.S.A.! (Present company excepted of course.)

I bet they feel stupid, lulz.

BOY SCOUT LAW (the real one, not the Improved Scouting bullshit from 1972 — on):

A SCOUT IS BRAVE . . .  “and defeat does not down him.”

So let’s bravely look at the bright side. Soon the BSA trademarks will be up for auction.

We can start REAL, AUTHENTIC BOY SCOUTING all over again and pretend the 1970s never happened.

The men of Texas can deal with the Commie SJW pricks at BSA HQ. They have experience with this shit.

Lawsuit Against Boy Scouts Details ‘Perversion Files’

Yes, adding tens of thousands of junior feminist GoGrrlz and tomboys — and their Second Wave feminist “PhD moms” with a Social Justice chip on their pocket flap — is the smart thing for BSA Corp. to do in the age of “Pound MeToo.”

It will definitively end the sexual abuse of young boys in the Boy Scouts.

Yep.

Definitively.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (CN) – Claiming the youth organization was infiltrated by pedophiles, an Arkansas man filed a lawsuit saying the Boy Scouts allowed a scout leader accused of sexually assaulting boys in Georgia to relocate and abuse him several years later.

“Since its inception, [the Boy Scouts of America] aggressively marketed the wholesomeness and safety of its programs to the American public,” the complaint states.  “Simultaneously, BSA concealed from scouts and their parents BSA’s certain knowledge that pedophiles had been infiltrating BSA in large numbers for many years.”The complaint, filed Wednesday in Pulaski County Circuit Court, claims the way the Boy Scouts tried to identify sexual abusers within its organization by keeping allegations a secret and discouraging police involvement led to Samuel Otts abusing William Stevens eight times in 1979 and 1980.

Otts helped lead a troop of scouts that met at the Salvation Army in Hot Springs, Arkansas, when Stevens was in his preteens, according to the lawsuit filed by lead attorney Joshua Gillespie of Green & Gillespie.

The suit seeks compensatory damages from the Boy Scouts of America and the Quapaw Area Council for claims of negligence and fraud.

While the statute of limitations has typically long passed for those types of claims, Gillispie wrote in the complaint that the Boy Scouts fraudulently concealed their actions from Stevens.
